Exactly one year on from the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games, we went back to Korea to film the many legacies the Olympic Games is bringing to the Gangwon region.
The shoot started well, when our camera kit and ‘personals’ actually arrived. (See our ‘Minus everything in PyeongChang’ describing in detail how our shoot back in late 2017 before the Games in Korea began with everything being lost in transit.)
It was an amazing feeling to return to a place that was celebrating the ‘One Year Anniversary of the Olympic Games with such passion and gusto. Like the Gangneung Ice Arena, home of the Figure Skating in 2018, but now the location of a kicking concert, where 10,000 screaming fans celebrated the spirit of the Olympic Games with Korea’s hottest K-POP artists.
Peace and Reconciliation was a big theme, as we filmed at concerts, schools and forums that put the spotlight on how PyeongChang 2018 helped to unite North and South Korea, with the first ever combined Ice Hockey team.
Okay we had our challenges, filming the figure skating icon that is Yuna Kim in a room next to the loudest sound check on the planet (the aforementioned K-POP acts).
Thankfully we had a ‘so-solid’ crew, mixing UK and Korean talent – and even an expat UK producer making the short hope across from Tokyo.
It ended well too, as on the last day, our awesome DOP Tom, redressed his ‘drone envy’ with the local crew – and got his own out.
